Rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder is a parasomnia characterized by loss of muscle atonia during REM sleep. Neurons and neuronal circuits responsible for REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) have not been confirmed. The control mechanism relating to REM sleep was discussed, and the known and presumed neural networks involved in REM sleep and RBD pathophysiology based on animal models were reviewed. Human RBD cases were used as reference, the putative neuronal circuits causing RBD were discussed, in order to promote better clarification for the clinical and pathophysiological causes of RBD.
