20世纪20年代的美国开始从生产社会向消费社会转变。伴随着消费社会的来临,消费文化开始蔓延,享乐主义大肆横行,传统的道德观念和价值体系逐渐土崩瓦解。作为爵士时代的桂冠诗人,菲茨杰拉德敏锐地捕捉到了这一文化脉象。在其小说《了不起的盖茨比》中,菲茨杰拉德不仅细致地呈现了消费社会的文化景观,还生动地展示了盖茨比在消费文化的引导下从绚烂到沉寂的人生悲剧,对消费文化作了无声的批判。
