摘要
大多数学英语的人,即使是从事英语工作多年的人,往往仍会感到自己的词汇量不足。要扩大词汇量,那是毫无疑问的,但要扩大到什么程度呢?七十年代,我国学者高名凯教授根据巴拉德(P.B.Ballard)的说法,认为英语有五十万词。随着这些年来社会经济、政治、文化和科技的发展。
Many English words have been formed by combining parts of older English, Greek, and Latin words. Tf yon know the meanings of some of these word parts (roots, prefixes and suffixes), you can often figure out thousands of words you read even if you have never seen them before. That’ s why the best approach to learning new words is through etymology.
