Ownership concentration and foreign ownership are two important aspects of the ownership structure of commercial banks that affect the property rights foundation of bank governance and banks ' risk-taking level. This paper examines the data of 32 Chinese commercial banks for the year 2003-2013 and explores how the ownership concentration and foreign ownership have affected banks ' risk-taking level. The results show that there is a U-shaped correlation between the large shareholders' shareholding proportion and commercial banks ' risks, meaning both "moral hazards" and "principal-agent" conflicts exist in the corporate governance of commercial banks. Increasing the equity balance of shareholders could contribute to lower non-performing loan ratio and higher provision coverage ratio. Foreign ownership can improve the quality of bank's assets. As the equity balance increases, the positive effects of foreign ownership would become more visible.
