Proposed by Jonathan Charteris-Black, Critical Metaphor Analysis provides quantitative and qualitative methods for studying metaphors in use. It offers a cognitive linguistic approach to Critical Dis- course Analysis. However, the current approach cannot account for why metaphors produce rhetorical and argumentative effects. This is mainly because current research methods of Critical Metaphor Analysis fail to investigate the interaction of metaphors in context, which results in a static and limited research scope. This paper explores metaphor scenarios in U.S. mainstream media reports on the Belt and Road Initia- tive. It is revealed that the interaction of metaphors gives rise to metaphor scenarios, which provide con- ceptual structures that are argumentatively and rhetorically exploitable. Analyzing metaphor scenarios thus brings forth interactive and dynamic perspectives, which contribute to explaining the rhetorical and argu- mentative effects of metaphors from a cognitive point of view.
