Background Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an unstable cognitive decline which is seen as an intermediate stage between normal aging and dementia, with high risks of dementia. Anesthetics may exert different influence on MCI patients. If anesthetics are used improperly in MCI patients, brain damage will be directly aggravated, brain functions be inhibited, and the conversion of MCI to dementia be even accelerated. Objective To explore the research progress in mild cognitive impairment and the influence of anesthetics. Content This review discussed knowledge regarding MCI, including definitions, diagnostic criteria, neuropathology, the relationship between MCI and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Parkinson's disease (PD), anesthetics' influence on MCI. Trend The current study on MCI can provide with new tools to identify and hopefully treat MCI, and also provide thoughts for reasonable selection and application of anesthetics.
