Urban shrinkage is a development path that is spreading widely across the world, which caused a range of city sustainable development problems. Recently, China has entered into a period of new normal and faced the supply side reform, while shrinking has also emerged in some cities and regions. As one of the major challenges that China may confront in the new-type urbanization, urban shrinkage should be regarded as an important issue and concerned by urban geographers. This article reviews the progress of urban shrinkage research in China and abroad based on the concepts and connotation of shrinkage. Firstly, we summarize the spatial distribution and topology of shrinking cities, and how to measure shrinking cities by spatial metrics. Then we further review the driving force, interaction process, simulation models and response strategies of urban shrinkage. At last, we point out while the occurrence of shrinkage is fairly universal, its determinants are less obvious and do not follow universal patterns, we may hardly apply an integrative model that maps the entire process across different contexts. Therefore, we need to build a local research framework that based on the Chinese urban contexts. The existing research pay much attention on describing the shrinking phenomenon, which shows less focus on understanding the evolution mechanism. In the next step, we may incorporate various data and technology to detect the shrinking pattern for different city and regions to deepen the research.
