The set-up of the University of Virginia was an important attempt to create public higher education in the United States. The attempt was rooted in the unique social environment of the early days, born out of long-standing colonial colleges and grown up in the oldest Virginia colony. From Albemarle Academy to the Central College then to the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, Cabell and numerous university friends made arduous efforts. Being honored as "mother of State University",the University of Virginia is indeed a great model of state university before the Civil War, and has generated a widespread and profound influence on the public higher education of United States.
