This research compared the characteristics of American private and public middle school teachers from the aspects of population characteristics and professional development conditions using the data collected by TALIS(2013). It find that in the population characteristics, the ratio of part-time teachers is much higher in private middle schools, the ratio of teachers that are permanent employed is much lower in private middle schools, and the average time that public middle school teachers worked in other education roles before is longer than that of private middle school teachers. As to professional development, the ratio of teachers that have completed a teacher education program or that have taken part in an induction program is higher in public middle schools, and public middle school teachers also spent more time in participating education conferences or seminars in average than private middle school teachers. Those results indicate that teaching workforce in private middle schools may not so stable than public middle schools, as well as the professionalization of teachers.
