In this paper, the numerical simulations are made by solving the two-dimensional full equations of hydrodynamics using the Simple method, and the tristability of traveling wave pattern in binary fluid convection in a rectangular cell is preliminarily studied. Three kinds of stable convection patterns which depend on the initial value for the separation ratio Ψ=-0.4 at reduced Rayleigh number r=1.8 are found for the first time, that is, the tristability of patterns of the counter propagating wave with the undulation of the defect source, the traveling wave with defects propagating towards the left, and the traveling wave with defects propagating towards the right. The propagating directions of two kinds of traveling wave with defects are different, but the appearing period of the defects and the variation of the maximum amplitude with time are the same. The patterns of the counter-propagating wave with the undulation of the defect source are different from those of the traveling wave with defects. The variations of the maximum amplitude with time for the two waves are also different. The result shows that the tristability or initial-value dependence exists for the traveling wave patterns in a binary fluid convection under the parameters used in this paper.
