The coming years will see more evidence of the sea-change caused by digitalisation, which is connecting people, cities, countries and continents to bring together a majority of the world's population in ways that vastly increases our individual and collective potential. But the same technological and economic forces have made the world also more volatile, more complex, and more uncertain. How do we educate students for their future, rather than our past? The dilemma for educators is that the knowledge and skills that are easiest to teach and easiest to test, are exactly the skills that are also easiest to digitise, automate and outsource. In fact, having good academic skills does not prevent people from using those skills to destroy, rather than advance, their societies. It comes down to the heart of education: helping students develop a reliable compass and the tools to navigate with confidence through an increasingly complex, volatile and uncertain world. The next generation of young citizens will also need to create jobs, not seek jobs, which will require curiosity, imagination, entrepreneurship and resilience, the joy of failing forward. This paper examines what this demands from tomorrow's teachers, and from tomorrow's policy- makers to encourage and incentivise all actors to develop the innovative learning environments that we need for tomorrow's schools.
