From the burial M4 at the Ancient City Site of the Xue State in Tengzhou City, Shandong, three bronze "bird-shaped cups" were unearthed. The dates of the similar vessels were all from the mid and late Western Zhou Dynasty to the Warring-States Period, the origin of which would be the ladle-shaped vessel with bending handle appearing in the mid and late Western Zhou Dynasty. Referring to the bronze Bo Gong Fu Ladle unearthed from the bronze hoard at Yuntang Village in Fufeng County, Shaanxi, we know that this kind of vessels are not "zan", but "jue" as their own names in the inscriptions on them. This kind of vessels were usually unearthed together with gu-gobletshaped vessels, and can be seen as the successor of the three-leggedjue-cups in the Shang and early and mid Western Zhou Dynasties. The bird-shaped vessel body might be the reason for the glossing of "jue" as "que (sparrow)" in the literatures since the Han Dynasty.
