The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 4 week swimming program guided by Halliwick on children with ASDs on behavior and aquatic skills. Methods:This study selected 40 patients with mild to moderate autism,The experimental group conducted Halliwick study for four weeks(1.5 h/d,from Monday to Friday). The control group just did in routine life mode; Before and after the experiment,we used the Autism Behavior Checklist(ABC)to the behavior evaluation and Humphries Assessment of Aquatic Readiness(HAAR)to the aquatic skills evaluation. Results:After the experiment the results of HAAR assessment of the two groups showed that there were significant differences in stage two water inflow, stage three rotation, stage four balance and control, stage five independent movement in water(P〈0.05),but no significant differences in stage one psychological adjustment(P〈0.05);After the experiment, the results of ABC assessment of two groups showed that there was significant difference between B(body movement),S2(self-care)and the mean score(P〈0.05);but no significant differences in S(sensory ability),R Language ability)(P〈0.05). After experiment,in the experimental group, there were significant differences of ABC scores in B(body movement)and S2(self-care)(P〈0.05)and no significant difference in S(feeling),R(skills)and L(language)(P〈0.05).There was no significant difference in the control group. The score of ABC was positively correlated with the degree of disorder, and the total score of experimental group decreased after treatment. Conclusions:Halliwick is an effective teaching method to guide the learning of water sports skills in autistic children. Halliwick has a positive effect on behavioral interventions in children with autism. Halliwick tends to improve social interaction skills in children with autism
