According to studies at home, it is said that the Latin name A. apiacea was first referred to in Chinese as qinghao by Yokusai IINUMA in his masterpiece Soumoku Zusetsu published in 1856. The authors, however, find that no A. apiacea is mentioned in both the 1 st edition of Soumoku Zusetsu and its manuscript version. The correspondence between A. apiacea and qinghao is found in Soumoku Zusetsu Mokuroku Soubu, which should be considered as the earliest mention according to current findings. Since the introduction of qinghao to Japan, multiple studies have been done on identification of the appearance characteristics and plant names in Japanese, Chinese and Latin. This paper reviews the identification process of qinghao and huanghuahao in Japanese herbal studies and reexamines those study results by field research. It further discusses how Bencao Gangmu(Compendium of Materia Medica) has been acting as a reference to Japanese studies on qinghao and elaborates on the objective reasons behind and all the insights we can get.
