Objective To explore the effect of single medication and drug combination on the duration of medication in patients with first recurrent schizophrenia and the causes for drug withdrawal. Methods 219 patients with first relapse of schizophrenia were divided into Single Group and Combination Group according to their medication. 89 cases in Single Group were administered with first-generation antipsychotics(FGA) or second-generation antipsychotic drugs(SGA) while 130 cases in Combination Group were administered with FGA+FGA, FGA+SGA or SGA+SGA. The duration of medication, reasons fordrug withdrawal and adverse drug reactions during the medication were compared between the two groups. Results Single Group had the duration of medication shorter than Combination Group [(39.23±12.37) weeks vs(52.81±20.53) weeks, P〈0.01]. More patients in Single Group withdrew the drugs due to adverse drug reactions than Combination Group(P〈0.05). Single Group had a higher incidence of adverse drug reactions than Combination Group(P〈0.05). Conclusion The patients that have received single medication of antipsychotics have a shorter duration of medication and more adverse drug reactions than those that have received drug combination. Adverse drug reaction is the main reason for drug withdrawal.
