France has pioneered global climate governance by actively involving itself in international climate negotiations and at the same time accelerating the domestic energy and ecological transition. In May 2017, Emmanuel Macron, the candidate of "En Marche!", a movement with less than one-year history, became the French President. He has since made many environmentally friendly speeches expressing his ambitions on environmental protection. However, over the first year of Macron's tenure of office, most of his promises have not been fulfilled and he has therefore been criticized scholars, the media and ordinary people. Although Macron has claimed to be an environmentalist, the future of French environmental and climate policy remains uncertain.
