Urban design theory since the modernist era has been predominantly object-oriented. As a result urban analysis and design strategies generally focus on the tangible, concrete and perceivable. The paper argues, however, that it is vital to understand the intangible, indeterminate and rhizomic sub-layers of context in order to develop the human city as a place in which to live, work and play. In order to achieve this, it is posited that an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to design be inculcated.
