From 1984-1987 in five study areas in four provinces and the City of Shanghai covering 1,008,855 inhabitants, we had investigated the incidence rate of the acute and chronic viral hepatitis and the mortality rate of hepatitis related diseases hepato-cellular carcinoma.1. The total number of cases of acute viral hepatitis reported and diagnosed was 1,475 ( 152/100,000), with 604 males and 571 females. The difference was statistically significant. Sixty four per cent of the patients occurred in adults 20-49 years of age. The data reported should be an useful reference for comparing with data collected from the epidemiolo-gical case reporting system. 2. The annual incidence rate of chronic viral hepatitis was 158,25/ 100,000 in 215,297 inhabitants in the four provinces investigated by house to house check up. The diagnostic criteria consisted of a definnite history of acute hepatitis more than six months ago, and abnormal ALT or TTT associated With either clinical symptoms or physical signs of liver diseases. Bassed. on these diagnostic criteria, 352 cases of chronic hepatitis were found and the incidence rate among the males was much higher than that in females people with HBsAg antigenemia, either associated with slightly abnormal ALT value or some clinical symptoms were excluded. So that the real incidence rate of chronic viral hepatitis might be much higher.3. The mortality rate of patients with hepatitis related diseases,inves-tigeted in 613,939 inhabitants, was 22.66X100,000, in which 58.9% died of hepatoma ( 13.5/100,000 ) .The highest mortality rate was found in the age-group over 40.
