Whether the traditional Chinese cultural principles of mutual help and reliance can survive and how they will be practised in modern times can be answered by investigations of the organizational principles of the mutual-help diabetics groups in unbanChina. Studying mutual-help among ward-mate groups in a specific cultural situation is of special value to understanding self-management of patients with chronic diseases. During the social process of patient education in more than twenty years, the interactions among diabetic patients in Beijing and their organizational expansion have reflected the organizational principle of quasi-familism and the cultural logic of mutual reliance. The empathy developed out of mutual help among these ward-mate groups has evolved intoquasi-familial emotions with specific paternalistic and fraternal characteristics and become a motivating force forforming ward-mate groups.
