Objective To discuss the risk factors and characteristics of age-related macular degeneration(AMD) in high altitude areas. Methods A total of 105 AMD patients lived in high altitude were selected as the case group, and 110 healthy people in the same period as the control group. The clinical data of the two groups were investigated. The risk factors and characteristics of AMD in high altitude areas was analyzed. Results Both groups had statistically significant difference in age, plateau life time, smoking history, high blood pressure history, wearing a sunhat or goggles status(P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that age, plateau life time, smoking history, and hypertension were risk factors for AMD, and wearing a sunhat or goggles was a protective factor for AMD(OR=8.562, 1.605, 1.936, 1.206, 0.284, P<0.05). Conclusion In addition to age, smoking, hypertension, high altitude living time and sunlight exposure have a significant impact on the incidence of macular degeneration in the elderly.
