As an important concept frequently mentioned in the study of Chinese garden history,"chengshishanlin (urban landscape)" has been clearly and concretely defined by scholars. In contrast, contemporary studies have long lacked tracing to the historical origin of the term. Based on historical documents retrieved from the Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature , this paper makes a preliminary study on the development and induction of the concept of "chengshishanlin", and finds that "chengshishanlin" was not an independent concept initially, and the process of integrating "chengshi (city)" and "shanlin (landscape)" was essentially a long-term thinking and choice of the literati class on the issue of "human habitation". This perception may help better understand the relationship between "garden" and "chengshishanlin".
