Author of What Really Matters,Harvard Professor Arthur Kleinman aims at making readers understand:“If we can learn to face the uncertain and dangerous reality,we can live better.”During the interview,Professor Arthur Kleinman emphasized a number of interrelated points relevant to China’s current situation.First, the spread of materialism is a global phenomenon, and moral problems exist around the world. There is definitely moral change in China, though this does not necessarily mean that China is experiencing a moral crisis.Second, the concept of“networks”(guanxi,or guanxiwang)is important not solely in Chinese society, but in the United States of America as well.Third, people all over the world are searching for meaning in an age that is very different from the past, and the growth of the Chinese middle class has made these quests much more readily intellectualized and much more visible.Fourth,we humans are complex beings with divisions inside ourselves,so we must cultivate moral principles into local worlds and into individuals.Fifth,Chinese parents of earlier generations taught their children the importance of enduring hardship, while current generations tend to place more emphasis on enjoying life and gaining and maintaining face.Sixth, this world is a dangerous world, and the Chinese have always been very concerned with our limits as human beings existing within it.Seventh, the Chinese worldview, especially a particular Daoist worldview from the past, can guide humans to live a more fulfilling life. And eighth,China is working very effectively in advancing the yanglao(“care for the elderly”)movement, though the time has come to increase the retirement age and try to implement a better social security system and better insurance. At the end of the article, the authors also summarized Kleinman’s recent research and thought on Square Dancing,Caregiving,Patient-Physician Trust, etc.
