Objective To understand the status of overweight, obesity and their effects on blood pressure in the children and adolescents in Xuzhou City. Methods A total of 2 147 students in 12 schools(primary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools ans universities) in Xuzhou City were randomly selected by the adopted stratified cluster sampling survey method, and they were classified in each grade and investigated. The data were inputted into Excel and statistically analyzed by SPSS 19.0. Results The detection rates of overweight and obesity were 17.9% and 13.3% respectively in the children and adolescents in Xuzhou City. The detection rates of overweight and obesity in the males were significantly higher than those in the females(χ~2=83.745, P<0.001). The detection rate of hypertension was 8.2%, and there was a statistically significant difference between different sexes(χ~2=5.225, P<0.05). The detection rates of hypertension in the normal group, overweight group and obese group were 6.6%, 9.4% and 15.0% respectively. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that sex, age, overweight and obesity were risk factors for hypertension in children and adolescents. Conclusion The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents were higher in Xuzhou City. The prevalence rates of hypertension in the overweight and obesity groups were higher than the rate in the normal weight group.
