The study of English middles has been mainly focused on the type with an adverbial modification so far. However, the overt elements in middles also include modals, stressed do and reflexives. This paper analyses the characteristics of those obligatory elements, finds that they are related to dynamic modality, and observes the historical distribution of all types of middles. The result shows that the development of middles can be best characterized in terms of the change in the manner of specifying the modal operator in T,from the direct merge of a modal or a stressed do in T as a basic strategy to the covert movement of an adverb or a reflexive as the later development. It proposes that modality is the defining characteristics of middles from the diachronic perspective.
