摘要
在高等教育领域,虚拟式外语教学尚处于初级阶段,但虚拟现实技术特有的模态再建功能可为外语教学提供新思路。虚拟现实技术可为学习者创造场景体验,调整模态信息,还可以赋予其沉浸体验者新的身份。尤其在非语言信息的呈现与交互方面,虚拟现实技术有助于重构学习的物理空间。虚拟式外语教学有助于学习者多感官协同参与学习,加深感知与体验效果,提升学习效果和语言应用能力。本文探讨了虚拟现实技术辅助再建教学模态的功能,通过对非语言信息的再现和利用使学习者在场景中进行真实的语言交流。
In higher education,virtualized foreign language teaching and learning is still at an initial stage.However,the nature of virtual reality techniques may reconstruct the learning modes,and inspire brand new ideas for foreign language teaching and learning.They are valuable in creating situational experiences,adjusting modal information,and infusing immersed learners with new identities.While nonverbal information is presented and exchanged,in particular,virtual reality techniques will help reconstruct the physical learning spaces.In this way,virtualized foreign language teaching and learning will facilitate learners’multisensory participation,strengthen the perceptual and experiential effects,thus making language learning more effective and enhancing the competence of language learners.Language is meaningful only in the social settings,therefore,situated cognition is vital for communication.In the process of interaction,each mode makes contribution to the interaction and understanding.This research explores the learning modes reconstructed by virtual reality techniques.The nonverbal information is vividly presented and the learners are offered the opportunity to interact in the real situation.Multimodal Situational Language Learning.Virtual reality techniques offer multi learning modes to facilitate the visualized and immersive experience,thus creating a real learning context.In the professional training in English public speeches,the technology gives rise to highly simulated experiences in psychological stress,perception and emotion experience when the learners face thousands of people.In the VR Freshippo Supermarket,the language practice may focus on the concept of New Retail,which is a seamless blend of the online and offline shopping model.In the situational experiences of the novel G ulliver’s T ravels,learners may encounter with the diminutive Lilliputians and the giants of Brobdingnag.While appreciating the poem Stopping by W oods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost,the learners may walk into the forest blanketed with snow,seeing the village in the distance,flakes in the sky,and woods beside the road;identifying the steps of the horse,the whisper of the wind,the crack of the icy lake.It will be much more sensitive and accurate to appreciate the author’s feeling and emotion.VR-Specific Nonverbal Communication.Virtual reality techniques effectively simulate,and significantly enhance the understanding of nonverbal information.In the VR-situated Business English training,the roles’appearance,body language,personal distance,action,gesture,voice,clothing,and the venue for communicating are indispensable for effective negotiation.Learners are supposed to get familiar with various nonverbal representations,and to apply the cross-culture rules.In another VR learning situation,learners are expected to take actions according to the audio instructions.If the learners fail to follow the instruction,the device is able to detect the reaction and then offers supplementary information to support further learning.All these VR learning situations have been used in our language practice,and the learning experience is positive and impressive.To summarize,Virtual reality techniques serve as the medium to connect the real world and virtual one,extending the space for learning and training.Virtualized foreign language teaching and learning will be widely and extensively applicable for the learners to experience the situation both physically and psychologically.
