Through the observation of 22 professional and student interpreters’treatment of impolite and over-polite speech acts, this study probes into the politeness consciousness of business liaison interpreters. It reveals that:1.When confronted with face-threatening acts in interpreter-mediated events, both groups of participants consciously shouldered the responsibility of gatekeeping and actively employed various coping strategies to maintain the faces of the interlocutors.2.Student interpreters,in their lack of clear orientation, focused on the immediate social context and were more prepared to mediate at the lexical level;professional interpreters,in contrast, attached equal importance to the broader social and cultural contexts and used coping strategies(lexical and syntactic)more liberally and intentionally.By placing politeness in the context in which it occurs, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of the interpreters’role of dual gatekeeping. Its findings are expected to shed new lights on interpreting practice and pedagogy.
