The identity of contemporary youth groups is an important research topic. Guiding the establishment of correct values in youth is an important task in the development of contemporary society. Rock music has a deep relationship with youth culture. On the basis of interviews and observation research, 55 highly involved rock music festival participants were taken as research objects to explore how they construct their group identity, group behavior, and festival meanings. Thus, this study offers a new understanding of the behavior and social value orientation of contemporary youth groups. Guided by the social identity theory framework, this study encodes qualitative data by adopting the theory description method followed by thematic analysis. The results show that the group consciousness of the highly involved participants presents a feature of progressively deep involvement, which reflects the psychological process of the individual’s sublimation into their accumulating experiences of participation at the music festivals. The participants experienced three stages of group consciousness formation, i.e., behavioral involvement, emotional involvement, and spiritual identity, which lay the foundation for a stable social connection. The participants’ high involvement stimulates them to realize a positive perception of their group, which is defined through multiple nested boundaries. These group boundaries are strengthened and optimized by social comparison and positive differentiation. The multiple nested boundaries in this research are as follows:"Midi Music Festival,"as the first boundary, which defines"My Group."The highly involved music festival participants are a"subcultural rock music group,"which differs from mainstream culture groups. The secondary groups defined by the second boundary(e.g., the"Midi Qian"music organization) includes different Midi Music Festival organizations. The group identities within this second boundary emphasize the combined role of intergroup comparisons and member interactions. These groups further strengthen the belonging and emotional involvement of the group members and also extend the social relationships between the festival participants into their daily life. This group identity process was found to constantly provide support for the maintenance and sublimation of individual identities and generate positive group participation and promotion behavior. Originating in the third space created by music, this group identity is not free from the constraints of geopolitical relations, although it tries to break away from the geographical boundary restrictions of traditional festivals. Finally, it forms a new kind of group identity that attempts to transcend real life, even though it is rooted in it. The new social group explored in this research is a microcosm of Chinese youth culture. This new group identity reflects a special group relationship that swings chaotically between the acquaintance and stranger societies, and provides an important reflection for the management of modern festivals and how to actively guide the cultivation of youth cultural values through music festivals. Festival managers should pay full attention to this new form of connection that combines live interaction and social networks, spreads a positive spirit in rock music culture, and enhances the festival participants’ community feelings to achieve and consolidate their high emotional involvement. Additionally, festival managers should explore the sociocultural values that their festivals convey to the participants and constantly construct a positive value orientation for youth cultural groups.
