Lockdown, isolation and stay-at-home order are effective prevention and control measures by the Chinese government to fight the COVID-19 epidemic.During the peak period, traveling is wishful thinking, and staying at home is a new normal. However, the stay-at-home restrictions are also accompanied by uncertainties that could not only exacerbate people􀆳s mental stress, but also cause unlimited spiraling of anxiety and other negative emotions.Meanwhile, given that in-person tour is impossible, some tourism authorities and agencies have launched different types of virtual tourism activities, which have drawn the attention of people staying at home and quickly become a hotspot in the tourism industry. While the stay-at-home order continues, which makes in-person experience impossible, could participating in virtual tourism activities be an effective way to mitigate pressure and improve emotion? Can it improve the mental health of stay-at-home people? This has become a theoretical and realistic issue worth research. Therefore, based on the theories related to restoration in environmental psychology, along with a sum-up of previous studies on virtual tourism experience and restoration in a virtual environment, this paper uses two-way repeated-measures ANOVA to gives an empirical examination of virtual tourism experience’s impact on people’s stress and emotion under the stay-at-home restrictions and verify the validity of virtual tourism experience in improving their mental health. Results of this research reveal that:(1)during the epidemic,a 6~8 minute virtual tourism experience could effectively alleviate the stress and negative emotion of stay-at-home people and stimulate their positive emotion which minimizes people’s stress level during virtual tourism experience;(2)nature-themed virtual tourism experiences delivers a much stronger restoration effect than that of city-themed ones. This research finds that the decrease of stress and negative emotion in nature-themed participants is obviously quicker than in city-themed participants,i.e.nature-themed virtual tourism experience is more helpful in alleviating stress and negative emotion. Also, naturethemed participants have a much quicker increase of positive emotion than city-themed participants,i.e.nature-themed virtual tourism experience is more helpful in stimulating participants’positive emotion.(3)the residence difference between rural and urban areas can influence the emotion restoration effect of the virtual tourism experience. This research finds that living in rural areas during the epidemic helps alleviate negative emotion,i.e.rural residents have much less negative emotion than urban residents, with no distinct difference in stress and positive emotion. The research results of this paper provide a new perspective of studying the relations between virtual tourism experience and mental health in special situations,as well as theoretical support and practical approach to stimulating positive emotion.
