Never Let Me Go is a dystopian novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the Nobel Prize winner in 2017.It is also one of the few literary works of human cloning that deals with the vulnerability of life and frames of recognition through a non-violent ethical perspective.Integrating science fiction themes, the novel allows readers to face the normative violence and recognition strategies in society.Supported by Judith Butler’s theories of performativity and recognition, this article argues that the identity of the clones is“performed”rather than“born”.In so doing, the article analyzes how the clones use body performativity as a strategy of seeking recognition.Simultaneously,it shows how a writer with international consciousness explores universal themes through literary imagination and fiction, giving voices to“unlivable lives,”and making readers of all places and eras to rethink the existing problems in the non-violent ethics.
