This paper applies the discourse-historical approach to an investigation into diachronic changes in Japanese mainstream media’s cognization of China’s"Belt and Road"initiative. It built a corpus of Belt-and-RoadInitiative-related reports in Japan’s three major newspapers—Yomiuri Shimbun,Asahi Shimbun and Nihon Keizai Shimbun, and divided them into three stages based on changes in number of texts, frequency of publication and thematic concern. Then it made a textual analysis of the Japanese media discourses, focusing on their subject matters and phraseologies, the strategies of nomination, argumentation and perspectivization peculiar to the methodology of critical discourse analysis. It could be concluded that:(1)Japanese mainstream media’s cognization of the Belt and Road Initiative has undergone the stages of"negative interpretation","rational reportage",and"active participation".When adopted to examine the three Japanese newspapers, the analysis of nomination had helped to reveal that the Japanese media’s discourse construction of the Initiative had transformed from earlier opposition and boycott to recent call for cooperation. The analysis of argumentation suggested that the three newspapers,in earlier times, fulfilled their negative representations of the Initiative by elaborating on the risk it could involve, and later on,in use of a large amount of data, the reports of the Initiative in these three newspapers turned more objective, whereas recently,in addition to their extensive use of data, the three newspapers argued for the Initiative being both useful and beneficial.Besides, the analysis of perspectivization disclosed the fact that in different stages, there were differences in frequency of using quotations and in their selected sources of information. In earlier times, the sources of information were mostly uncertain, and the newspapers expressed their viewpoints of the Initiative in a rather indirect manner, while recently, they were more inclined to employ direct quotations from ascertained sources of information.(2)The discourse-historical analysis of the reasons for changes in major Japanese newspapers’cognization of the Belt and Road Initiative revealed the role of the political and economic backdrop against which reporting texts were produced. In earlier times, the major Japanese media were much concerned that the Belt and Road Initiative might be a tool with which China could fulfill its geopolitical purpose so as to alter the international political and economic order, and as a result, they published negative reports over the Initiative.Recently, with more countries and regions’active participation, and USA’s attitudinal change in its treatment of the Belt and Road Initiative and Japan’s pressing need for the rejuvenation of its national economy, the Japanese media had to recognize and re-elucidate the Initiative. In sum, these changes could be attributed to discourse strategies Japanese mainstream media has been employing in setting the tone of their reports in line with changes in Japan’s diplomatic and economic ties with China, which faithfully manifests the truth that media can work towards but one aim of serving politicians in positions of authority and propagating ideologies they advocate.
