摘要
《解说疾病的人》是当代印度裔美国小说家裘帕·拉希莉的成名之作,小说集中的同名小说亦受到学界的广泛关注,许多评论一致认为小说关键词“疾病”具有高度的隐喻性。然而,有关疾病之源、疾病解说失败的原因却众说纷纭。本文主要从该小说叙事的隐性进程入手,对文本加以细致考察,力图对上述疑问进行合理解释,以期挖掘隐性进程的叙事魅力。研究发现:隐蔽于男性的“凝视”中的隐性进程对人物形象、主题意蕴进行了颠覆。达斯夫人和卡帕西先生均是深受心疾折磨的患者,其疾病之源在于父权意识带给他们的双重身份,这也注定了疾病解说的失败。
Interpreter of Maladies is the acclaimed work of Jhumpa Lahiri,a contemporary Indian-American novelist.The novel of the same name inthis story collection has also reccived academic attcntion widely.Manycritics agree that the keyword“malady”is highly metaphorical.However,there are various views on the source of the malady and thereasons for the failure to interpret it.This paper focuses on the covertprogression in the novel,examines the text closely,and tries to offer reasonable explanations for the above questions,aiming to explore thenarrative charm of the covert progression.The paper finds that thecovert progression of this novel hidden in the male“gaze”has subvertedthe revelation of characters and theme connotation.Both Mrs.Das and Mr.Kapasi are patients suffering from psychological disease.Thesource of their disease lies in their dual identities resulting from thepatriarchal consciousness,which also dooms the malady interpretationto failure.
