摘要
托尔金著作中有本稀有的《语文学家诗集》,从其中的古英语诗歌《跨越茫茫大海》可以理解托尔金为什么由他的语文学研究转向了魔幻文学创作:在克服内在的宗教抵牾之后,他的转向恰恰是对大学文学学科的传统养成模式的整理和称颂,并由此对语文学家的养成道路加以拯救。从他的这一历程可以看出现代文学学科中语文学的逐渐式微和托尔金的挣扎尝试。他的诗歌表明这种尝试未必是保守而复古的,他的作品对读者的吸引力足以表露托尔金的心愿和证实他在语文学研究上所取得的成就。
Tolkien's Songs for the Philologists is a very rare manuscript,in which the Old English Poem“Ofer Widne Garsecg”may tell why Tolkien has shifted from philology to the writing of his private mythology.After an appeasement of his inner religious confliction,his shift is exactly an attempt to put together and up the traditional pedagogy of literature in college so as to rescue the training path of a philologist.Tolkien's experience at that time shows both the decline of philology as a discipline and his own struggle.His poem tells that he has not played conservative or old-fashioned,but affinitive to the reader,which has confirmed finally both his commitment and achievement.
