Bei Xing Ri Ji(《北行日记》, Diary of the Northbound Journey), written by XUE Baotian, was published in the eighth year of Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty, which records author’s experience of providing diagnosis and treatment for Empress Dowager Cixi. In this book, XUE Baotian also recorded his social communication and mentality during this northbound journey. XUE Baotian regarded himself as a Confucian, and the people he socialized with were mostly government officials. For him, medicine was just an "insignificant skill". However, XUE Baotian was distinguished by his medical skill, which also facilitated the expansion and maintenance of his social circle. The two identities of "physician" and "Confucian" presented a complicated fusion in XUE Baotian.
