The middle Han River valley is located in a transitional zone where cultures of North and South China interacted actively in the past, leading to the formation of a culturally complicated zone.Compared with the Yellow and Yangtze River valleys, the middle Han River valley has remained poorly understood, especially in studies of prehistoric subsistence economy. The present paper, through an examination of animal skeletal remains unearthed at the Dasi site in Yunxian County, proposes that local communities at the site should have relied heavily on both animal husbandry and hunting,a subsistence economy well compatible with the ecotone.Given the discoveries at Dasi and other sites in neighboring areas,it is clear that within the middle Han River valley subsistence strategies varied from area to area which,we tentatively propose, should be related to ritual or ceremonial activities.
