Frugivorous birds are beneficial to the spread of plant seeds. To explore the effect of Viburnum odoratissimum var.awabuki fruit maturity and frugivorous birds feeding on seed germination,we selected seeds in the red and purple black V.odoratissimum var.awabuki fruits, observing the species of frugivorous birds and their feeding patterns, and simulating the swallowing/pecking effects of frugivorous birds by manually removing the pulp and scarifying seed-case and then detecting the effect of these treatment on seed germination. The results showed that V.odoratissimum var.awabuki seeds have non-deep,simple,epicotyl morphophysiological dormancy;after the fruits entered mature period,as the fruit color changed from red to purple-black,seed dormancy also grew deeper;the feeding of purple-black fruits by frugivorous birds promoted both seed dispersal and release of seed dormancy and germination, while the feeding of red fruits by frugivorous birds only promoted seed dispersal and has no significant effect on seed dormancy and germination.
