Microbes are ubiquitous in the environment and occupy almost all habitats. According to the Human Microbiome Project, 90% of the cells inside healthy adults are microbes. So, do microbes still exist after human death? How will they change? With the development and maturity of microbiome, sequencing technologies and artificial intelligence, some researchers employed high-throughput sequencing technologies and discovered that the microbial community would show a certain succession with the occurrence of the decomposition of corpses, which was related to the postmortem interval(PMI)in forensic medicine. Moreover, artificial intelligence technology combined with the microbial sequencing data can be used to discover useful information and regularities for estimating PMI, opening a new gate for PMI estimation. In this paper, we reviewed recent advances in the study of postmortem succession of microbial community, aiming to demonstrate its potential application in forensic PMI estimation.
