Two categories of bronze pouring vessels during the Shang and Zhou period went through four phases of development, basically parallel to the developmental trend of bronze vessels in general. Through investigating assemblages of bronze pouring vessels and bronze vessels in burials, along with paleographic clues,it is proposed that these two categories of bronze pouring vessels should be named “dou ladles” and “dippers”.The former is used for serving wine, while the latter, retrieving water. They were distinguishable during the late Shang through the mid-Spring and Autumn period and gradually became identical thereafter. In addition, some bronze vessels, which are often mistaken for pouring vessels, are also analyzed and identifi ed a unique form of serving vessel.
