摘要
本文对江西省3个县79所学校6269名学生开展了课外读物的随机干预实验。研究发现:仅建立班级图书角对农村贫困地区小学生的平均阅读成绩没有显著正向作用,可能因为此干预未改变学生的阅读兴趣、阅读行为和教师的阅读指导方式等。异质性研究结果发现,该项干预显著提高了家庭课外藏书较多、老师能推荐课外书以及学校有图书馆但不借书学生的阅读成绩,干预使这些学生的教育回报提高12.67%-24.16%。可见,硬件投入配合家庭和学校的阅读指导,创造良好的阅读环境是提升农村贫困地区学生阅读能力的有效措施。本文为利用教育扶贫提升农村儿童人力资本质量提供了可落地的证据。
This paper reflects the result of a randomised intervention experiment of extracurricular reading materials conducted among 6 269 students from 79 schools in three counties of Jiangxi Province. The results of the study reveal that the establishment of reading corners in classrooms did not have a significant positive effect on the average reading performance of primary school students from impoverished rural areas. A possible reason for this may be because such interventions do not alter students’ interest and behaviour or the instructional teaching methods. However, the heterogeneity analysis indicates that the intervention can significantly increase the reading performance of students whose families have more extracurricular books, whose teachers can recommend extracurricular materials, and whose school has a library that the children do not borrow books from. It is estimated that the intervention improves the educational performance of these students between 12.67% and 24.16%. It is also noted that investing in hardware, along with reading instruction at home and in school to create a favourable reading environment, is an effective measure for improving the reading ability of students in impoverished rural areas. This paper provides empirical evidence on the use of education as a poverty alleviation instrument to improve the quality of rural children’s human capital.
