Qiu Zhaoao’s Detailed Annotation of Du Fu’s Poems is as much praised as blamedby Chinese and Japanese academic field. This paper sorts out complimentary and derogative comments of scholars on the book since the Qing Dynasty, and further examines whether these evaluations are reasonable or not, based on its writing background and the related literature. It can be seen that the accusations of the value defects of the bookmade by various scholars are unfair, and it is necessary to re-examine the relevant slander and praise. Firstly, the comment that the quotations in the book contain fabricated elements is unjust since in that era, almost all of the commentaries revised the original text and based on the popularity of changing the characters to interpret Du Fu in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the quotations of the bookmay have been revised. Secondly, the idea that the annotations contain redundant and superfluous elements, especially in the aspect of phonetic annotation, is unfair in that Qiu Zhaoao bore the principle of enlightening readers despite the fact it may cause reader to feel tedious.Thirdly, in Detailed Annotation of Du Fu’s Poems, Qiu frequently regarded the pronunciation of his birthplace as the pronunciation of Du Fu’s medieval pronunciation, which undoubtedly isa mistakein Qiu’s annotation. However, from another point of view, the large number of phonetic annotations in the book also provide us with valuable information for understanding the pronunciation of the region at that time.
