摘要
自20世纪50年代以来,海外汉学界已编辑出版了多部以“中国古代文学”为主体的综合性英译选集。不过,从中国本土读者角度,当人们为这些选集收录的英译文一一找到汉语原文后总会发现:它们与国内原文选集相比在选材上总存在或多或少的差异。本文以《哥伦比亚简明中国传统文学选集》为例,认为差异分主客观两方面成因。客观上,英译与原文已不再是同样的编纂素材。主观上,海外的创作环境、编者、读者、译者以不同方式影响了选材。本文希望由此案例总结的若干规律,对理解此类海外作品与国内原文选集通常存在的选材差异有启示作用。
Thanks to the efforts of overseas Sinological community,several comprehensive English anthologies themed on ancient Chinese literature have emerged since 1950s.However,from the viewpoint of a Chinese reader,one would never fail to notice certain discrepancies in material selection,when the original works for the English selections are identified one by one and checked against a commonly-seen domestic anthology in original Chinese.This paper sets out to explore the causes of such discrepancies by a case study of The Shorter Columbia Anthology of Traditional Chinese Literature.The causes are two-sided.Objectively,translations and original texts can no longer be treated as the same kind of compiling material.Subjectively,selectionmaking is subject to the influence of overseas production context,editors,readers and contributors in their own different ways.It is hoped that regular patterns derived from this case can help illuminate this issue applicable to similar overseas works and their Chinese counterparts.
