Gan Bao,an important scholar of Yijing(also known as Book of Changes)and a historian in the Eastern Jin Dynasty(317—420),made an attempt to interpret the Yijing by combining it with“Five Elements Circulation Theory”.Through his hard work, the concept of“Transfer Tianming”became sustainable and the power of human nature was revealed.Gan’s interpretation of the book was influenced by the ideas of Confucius’(BC551—BC479)Spring and Autumn Annals and Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian.Gan Bao compared the four virtues of“Yuan-Heng-li-Zhen”with the five elements of Spring and Autumn Annals, through the historical facts of the revolution between the Zhou and Shang Dynasties, providing reference for the Sima family at that time and later monarchs, and shows their cultural ideal of kingcraft.By annotating the Xugua zhuan and Zagua zhuan,Gan Bao expounded the unification between Tian Dao(about Heaven)and Ren Dao(about Human),Three Cardinal Guides with Six Laws determined by Tian Dao,revealing that Dao and human affairs should be changeable and personnel should be flexible. Finally,he put the key to the realization of the ideal of kingly way under humanization in the hands of the sage sovereign, who had a heavenly mandate and put forward high expectations for the sage sovereign.
