The recent convergence of microbiology,engineering,genomics,and synthetic biology have fostered a burgeoning discipline:Engineering Microbiology.We can now design and build microbes with desired functions according to engineering principles,and this is enabling development of new approaches and unprecedented tools that are supporting major breakthroughs to overcome grand challenges in the environment,health,food,material,and energy.
