摘要
戈尔丁的小说《黑暗昭昭》通过人物之间和人物与环境之间似真似幻关系的书写,对善恶二元问题进行了深刻的宗教—伦理探索,延续着他对人性和社会的道德思考。但戈尔丁似乎没有找到确切的答案,因而小说中的人物并非黑白分明的善恶二元对立,而是黑白相间、善恶共生。小说中由光、火、黑、白等大量视觉意象构成的环境和环境要素,在为故事提供背景的同时,又不时生发出象征涵义,从而转换成图形,引导叙事由具象的物理空间滑向抽象的精神世界,形成了故事表层与意蕴的巨大张力,也造成了小说伦理主题的模糊性。从读者认知角度看,图形与背景的对应与转换是作者意向性投射的重要方式。
Through the writing of seemingly real relations between characters and between characters and environment in Darkness Visible, Golding explores the issue of the good/evil duality, continuing with his moral pondering over human nature and social problems. However, he does not seem able to find a definite answer, for his characters are not set in the sharp binary opposition of either being good or being bad, but seem to be mixed with white and black, and good and evil. The great many visual images concerning light, fire, white, and black constitute the novel’s setting and setting elements. While proving the environment for the story, these setting and setting elements often generate symbolic implications, and transform from the ground into the figure. Such figure/ground transformation pilots the narration from the concrete physical space to the abstract spiritual world, and thereby forms great tension between the surface and its connotation of the story, leaving moral ambiguity to the thematic exploration. In view of the reader’s cognition, the figure-ground correspondence and transformation is one of the major ways whereby the author projects his intentionality in his writing.
