Before folklore was studied as a subject in Japan, the British folklorists had already studied it at the end of the 19th century. The study of Japanese folklore was dominated by British Japanologists, who lived in Japan but maintained close interaction with European and American folklore research groups taking Britain as the center.Although the British-style folklore study(Folklore)led by the West lasted only about 40 years in Japan,it had a significant impact on the formation of Japanese folklore, and became an important chapter in its history.Only by focusing on those forgotten folklorists and Japanologists and repositioning hidden clues of Western folklore, the history of Japanese folklore and the knowledge exchange between East and West can be understood more comprehensively.
