Shih-I Hsuing is a bilingual writer as renowned as Lin Yutang in the first half of the twentieth century, and he is also the first drama translator helping Peking Opera go abroad and go on the English and American stages.Taking HSIUNG’s translations of two Chinese Operas,Lady Precious Stream and The Romance of the Western Chamber, with opposite reception as examples, this paper analyzes the success and failure of his translations as well as the historical and cultural motivation behind, thus providing reference for Chinese culture, especially the English translation of Chinese opera,to go global and to be accepted by the foreigners. It is found that the success and failure of the two translations is inevitable, whether at the subjective level of the translator’s motivation and strategic choice,or at the objective level of the Other’s reflections and social environment. The translation must conform to the mainstream values and aesthetic taste of the local culture in order to achieve the effect of knowing, liking and enjoying by the audience.
