A group of glazed pottery horse and rider figurines unearthed from the Eastern Wu tomb of Ding Feng in Nanjing represent the earliest evidence of treed saddles with single-sided stirrups and netted cruppers discovered in China. The riders on the figurines are all Hu people, holding banners, small percussion instruments, and wind instruments, and are believed to be a group of figurines in a procession playing drums and wind instruments. This group of figurines provides new material for studying the origin and development of horse accoutrements, the clothing and status of the Hu people, and processional ceremonies of the Six Dynasties period. Moreover,as they were unearthed from a tomb with a confirmed date and tomb occupant, they are of great significance for researching the funerary system and customs of the Eastern Wu period.
