艾布拉姆斯将英国浪漫主义诗学归属为指向“艺术家”的“表现论”,该划分至今仍是国内外学界的主流认识。但细读骚塞诗文书信,可以发现骚塞诗歌创作致力于赢取“合适的读者”,主张诗表达“纯粹真理”,尊崇“贺拉斯的告诫”,希冀“认真且真诚地探讨一些所有人都关切的话题”来“唤醒国人”。因而他在根本上奉行指向“读者”的“实用论”创作理念。将骚塞诗学厘定为“实用论”,有助于揭示骚塞诗学与其社会现实关切之间的内在统一。
M.H.Abrams's categorization of English Romantic poetics as“the expressive theory”displaying a discernible orientation towards“the artist”still holds sway in the academia both at home and abroad.A close reading of Southey's poems,essays and letters reveals that he commits to obtaining“fit audience”with his production,advocates that poetry conveys“pure truth”,venerates“Horace's admonitions”,intends to“awaken the country”by“writing earnestly and sincerely upon things in which all persons are concerned”,and thus fundamentally observes the“pragmatic”notion of reader-orientation for production.To categorize Southey's poetics as“the pragmatic theory”contributes to revealing the inherent unity of Southey's poetics and his actual social concerns.
