In 2012,Tianhui medical bamboo was unearthed from the No.3 Han Tomb in Laoguanshan,Chengdu, which was buried around the time of Emperor Jing and Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty,i.e.,between the medical books of Mawangdui and the traditional medical book Neijing(《内经》).In this paper,we study the“Hu”and“Shan”in Tianhui Medical bamboo, which are different names for the same disease, referring to the pain in the heart and abdomen.“Hu”is not included in the traditional texts, but is known to be found in Tianhui medical bamboo. There are 10“Hu”diseases in Book of Pulse, and the naming pattern is based on yin and yang diagnosis, cause of disease, location, and part of the body.“Shan(疝)”is written as“Shan(山)”in Tianhui medical bamboo, and Book of Pulse contains two kinds of“Shan” diseases, which are named by their parts.“Shan”originally means pain in the heart and abdomen, but later it is derived from the meaning of swelling of the pubic area, whereas“Hu”does not have such a meaning.
