In Everyman,Philip Roth integrates a gendered perspective to examine the theme of aging.Conceptualizing the body as a site where gender and age intersect, the novel delves into the protagonist Everyman’s experience and practices of bodily“decline”and“anti-decline”,thereby illustrating the multifaceted crises of masculinity faced by aging men.His somatic and psychological struggles are not solely attributable to the biological realities of aging, but are also shaped by modern cultural constructs of gender and age, taking root in the modern knowledge-power structures that equate“old age”with the negation of the body. The intensification of masculinity crisis prompts the protagonist to undergo a tortuous process of self-discovery.Through the practices of care of the self,he transcends the binary construction of aging as either decline or anti-decline,and distances himself from the body-centric understanding of gender and age.Ultimately,Everyman shifts his focus toward relationality and self-reflection,seeking a more inclusive, reflexive, and introspective renegotiation of masculinity in old age.
