This article quantitatively analyzes the empowering role of digital technology in forming the new quality productive forces in agriculture, based on panel data from 30 provinces for 2012—2022.Research findings:Digital technology can effectively promote the formation of new quality productive forces in agriculture. This conclusion remains valid even after the robustness test. The heterogeneity analysis reveals that digital technology plays a more significant empowering role in the new quality productive forces in major grain-producing regions and provinces east of the Hu Line. The effect mechanism analysis shows that digital technology can empower the formation of new quality productive forces in agriculture by increasing the total factor productivity in agriculture.Additionally, the regulation mechanism analysis suggests that the construction of new infrastructure can amplify the empowering effect of digital technology on new quality productive forces in agriculture. The research conclusion can offer new insights into leveraging the empowering role of digital technology in promoting the formation of new quality productive forces in agriculture.
